The Hispanic Business Student Association recently attended the National Hispanic Business Association Leadership Conference in Las Vegas, NV. The 19th annual leadership conference and career fair was held from Thursday October 23rd through Saturday October 25th. The conference entailed guest speakers, workshops, networking among other chapters, the 'B.E.S.T.'(Business-Engineering-Science-Technology) National Hispanic Career Fair, and on-the-spot interviews. Victor Antonio Gonzalez, CEO of a multibillion dollar company, and Ruben Ruiz, author of ' The Richest Latino In America', were among the keynote speakers during the conference. The workshops were presented by the following companies: KPMG, CIA, Monster, Cargill, Ford, Target, Waste Management, Goldman Sachs, Abercrombie and Fitch, UNUM, Hormel, FDIC, Freddie Mac, SEO, Deloitte, CPA exam Workshop, Discover Financial, GMAC, P&G, and New York Life. The topics during the workshops ranged from interviewing tips, career stability, leadership, Wall Street 101,

HBSA at UTPA attended a New York Life mixer, which was by invitation only. This was a great networking opportunity to expand our relationship with New York Life in the near future.

Before the conference, NHBA informed the chapters about several scholarships awarded to students attending the conference. Students had to apply before-hand and submit their resumes along with their application. Laura Davila, the Vice-President of External Relations for HBSA, won a $1000 scholarship from Cargill. Only four out of the 500 plus students at the conference received these scholarships and one of the students is from UTPA.

On the last day of conference the 42 HBSA chapters across the Nation came together for the NHBA-National Hispanic Business Association Spirit Competition. The guidelines stated that the chapters should incorporate school colors, utilize music of a Latino artist, and represent each particular university. Scoring was based on presentation, performance, creativity, theme, and preparedness. The 42 chapters were divided into two divisions, division I included: UT Pan American, TX State, TX A&M, California State University- Northridge, University of Houston, and Arizona State. HBSA placed 3rd among division I. 14 HBSA members attended the conference and 10 American Marketing Association members also attended. The University of Texas Pan American was represented with a total of 24 undergraduate students. Overall, the NHBA conference was a great success for HBSA and we hope to grow our number of attendees at next year's conference!
